SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING INDONESIAN EFL LEARNERS: FILLERS USED ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ PRESENTATION IN UNDERGRADUATE THESIS PROPOSAL SEMINAR CONTEXT

The aims of this research are to find out the function of fillers and the most dominant functions of fillers used by English Department students in their undergraduate thesis proposal presentation. This paper is descriptive qualitative research. This paper used theories of Rose (1998) to analyze the fillers. The subject of the research are twelve students of English Department seventhsemester students at Tidar University. The analysis items are types and functions of fillers. Both of them are transcripts of each audio recorded by English Department students in their undergraduate thesis proposal presentation that will be analyzed by the writer. The data collection is the writer planned the approach before the data collected. This plan involved the observation of audio recorder preparation by voice recorder. Firstly, the writer chooses some appropriate undergraduate thesis proposal presentations. Secondly, the writer records the data from some students‟ undergraduate thesis proposal presentation. Thirdly, the writer created a transcription of each data. Lastly, the writer analyzes the data by coding each data to find the types and functions of fillers, and the most dominant fillers used by English Department students in their undergraduate thesis proposal presentation. The data validation of this research is expert judgements. As the result, the result of this study shows that there are two types of fillers, there are lexicalized fillers (LF) and unlexicalized fillers (UF). The writer finds that 58.5% or 447 items unlexicalized fillers (UF) used by the 12 respondents and there are 41.5% or 317 items lexicalized fillers (LF) used by the 12 respondents. The writer finds and calculates that mark of hesitation, empathizing, and time-creating devices as the most dominant function which have the number of total 24.75% or 25 items, followed the editing terms that has 21.78% or 22 items, and the less is mitigating that has 3.97% or 4 items. In conclusion, the English Department students need to more aware in the fillers usage. Thus, to overcome the problem the students need to gain more vocabulary and practice their speaking skill.
