SKRIPSI THE ILLOCUTIONARY SPEECH ACTS ANALYSIS OF WRITTEN CONVERSATION IN TEXTBOOK ENTITLED “BAHASA INGGRIS” USED BY TENTH GRADERS

Illocutionary act is one of the important elements of communication. It is used in spoken and written conversations. A speaker usually expresses the implied communicative intention in the speech. Moreover, the same utterance sometimes has different implied meaning in different contexts. Therefore, it is quite important to be aware of illocutionary acts. However, it is not easy to comprehend the implied meaning, especially in the written conversation. The purposes of this research were to analyze the types of illocutionary acts of written conversation in the textbook used by tenth graders entitled "Bahasa Inggris" based on Searle’s classification and to find out the functions of illocutionary acts based on Leech's classification. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The data was collected from the written conversations in the textbook "Bahasa Inggris" used by tenth graders. The types and functions of illocutionary acts became the main point in the data analysis to answer the research problems. Based on the analysis, there were only four types of illocutionary acts in the textbook. Those are representative, directive, commissive, and expressive. Moreover, for the functions there were all four functions of illocutionary acts found. The four functions are competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. The pedagogical implication of this research relates to the material development that supports the teaching-learning process. It is expected to give the insight to comprehend the implied meaning. It will help the learners to improve their ability in reading comprehension. The material of reading comprehension, especially implied meaning can be reached when the context is given. The students can understand the implied meaning by deducing meaning from the context.
