The Indonesian education ministry took steps to anticipate the spread of the Covid-19 virus by prohibiting every educational from kindergarten to university from conducting direct learning. It conveyed in regulation No.4 of 2020 that education in Indonesia should change to online or with limited meetings. During this E-learning, the students usually interact with their teacher using several applications to do face to face meeting. Face-to-face in E-learning is the same thing as face-to-face in class (Coverdale 2000). Based on the writer’s observation, the pre-service English teachers in SMA N 5 Magelang often asked a question to the students who are passive during E-learning speaking classes. However, pre-service English teachers did not consider the types of questions when asking questions to the students. It is necessary because not all types of question are suitable in all situation. Pre-service English teachers used several types of questions during the teaching-learning process. Therefore, the writer conducted research by analyzing the questioning strategy types during teaching speaking. The types were analyzed using Wajnyrb (1992) who classified the types of question to six types: Yes/No, Short-Answer, Display, Open-Ended, and Referential question. The research is descriptive qualitative and used documentation to collect the data. The result shows that pre-service English teachers use five types of questions during the teaching-learning process in E-learning speaking classes. There are 185 utterances of question from pre-service English teachers while conducting the teaching-learning process. The most used question by pre-service English teachers is Yes/No question which occurs 85 occurrences. The pre-service English teacher used for about 45.9% Yes/No question during the teachinglearning process in E-learning speaking classes. The writer gives the pre-service English teachers a suggestion to integrate all types of questions in questioning strategy as much as possible in the teachinglearning, especially in speaking class, to allow the students to train their speaking. While for the other researcher the writer suggests to analyze more pre-service English teachers from different schools to compare what question types are used in another school from pre-service English teachers.
