At the beginning of 2020, the Indonesian Education Ministry decided to make a regulation to anticipate the spreading of COVID-19 by stopping the face to face meeting class in the schools. By that regulation, the education system in Indonesia changed and applied virtual learning activity. According to Ardiansyah (2013), virtual or e-learning is a learning system as an alternative way used for the teachinglearning process without having a face to face meeting between the teachers and the students. Since the learning system is changed, the researcher is interested to find out the students’ difficulty in learning the English subject. Writing is one of the ways to communicate by expressing the idea in a written form to give information to the reader. Writing is also a complicated activity for the students because it takes a long process. Therefore, the writer decided to investigate the students’ difficulty in writing recount text during virtual learning of the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Muntilan. The objective of this research is to find out the difficulties of the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Muntilan in writing recount text during virtual learning. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The sample subject of this research is X MIPA 1 that consists of 32 students. To gain the data, the researcher applied documentation, questionnaires, and interview. The documentation was gained from the students’ work in writing recount text to find out the students’ difficulty. The questionnaire and interview were applied to know the causes of the students’ difficulty in writing recount text during virtual learning. The result showed that there were five difficulties faced by the students in writing recount text such as grammar (56.2%), vocabulary (12.5%), mechanics (62.5%), fluency (21.8%), and form/ organization (9.4%). It means that the most dominant difficulty in writing recount text is the mechanics. Besides, the causes of the students’ difficulty in writing recount text during virtual learning are grammatical weakness, lack of knowledge and understanding, less practice, and educational background with the most dominant cause is less practice. The writer gives the suggestions to the principal of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Muntilan to more support and facilitate the English teacher in having virtual teaching and learning activity. Then, the teacher should attract the students in having virtual learning activities, especially in writing.
