One of the objectives of English learning is to develop students‘ language skills that can enable them to communicate in written and spoken English as stated in the curriculum 2013. This means that the students must master communicative competence. However, the teaching and learning process of English in most schools still focuses on the linguistic competence or grammatical aspect. It is also important to learn the cultural aspect specifically the sociocultural competence. Meanwhile, the use of textbooks still dominates the English teaching and learning process in Indonesia. Therefore, as one of the sources in learning English for students, a textbook must contain communicative competence especially the sociocultural competence. This study aims to describe the variables of sociocultural competence in reading texts and to describe the most dominant variables in reading texts in English textbook ―Bahasa Inggris Kelas XI‖ published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. The writer analyzed the Sociocultural Competence based on the theory of Communicative Competence by Celce-Murcia (2007). The writer described all variables of Sociocultural Competence found in the reading texts. The data was collected by using the documentation technique by Sugiyono (2016) and analyzed by using the data analysis model from Miles, et al. (2014). The English textbook ―Bahasa Inggris Kelas XI‖ focusing on the reading texts is the subject of this research. The result of this research shows that all three variables were found in the reading texts of English textbook ―Bahasa Inggris Kelas XI‖. There were 7 reading texts analyzed and all those seven contain Stylistic Appropriateness along with Cultural Factors (both are 37%) while Social Contextual Factors were found in only 5 texts (26%). Therefore, it is recommended to use the reading texts in this textbook as the reading materials. It is because the reading texts are proven containing the sociocultural competence that is one of competencies students must have.
