SKRIPSI TEXTUAL MEANING ANALYSIS OF AN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK ENTITLED BAHASA INGGRIS FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADE XI

This study is about analysis of textual meanings in English textbook. This research has two aims. The first aim is to find the kinds of textual meaning and the second one is to know the implication of textual meaning which is used in „Bahasa Inggris‟ textbook for senior high school grade XI. Textual meaing is indicated by Theme and Rheme within the clauses. Halliday and Matthiessen (2014, p.105) said that theme is coded by three elements, they are topical, textual and interpersonal. The student textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris Stop Bullying Now Kelas XI published by The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture was choosen as the object of the study because it is the most widely used textbook in state schools in Indonesia. This research was qualitative research design. The data of this research was clause which were taken from eight texts in the „Bahasa Inggris‟ Textbook for senior high school grade XI. The method used in collecting the data was documentation. For the steps in analyzing the data the writer did some steps such as; taking the data, breakdown the text into the clause, identifying and analyzing the textual meaning, tabulating the result, and making conclusion. In analyzing the data, the writer described the textual meaning based on the theory of textual meaning by Halliday & Matthiessen‟s (2014). The result of this research shows that there are 811 clauses which are found in Chapter 1 until Chapter 8. The result shows that there are 82 Marked Topical Theme (10%), 476 Unmarked Topical Theme (59%), 226 Textual theme (28%), and 27 Interpersonal Theme (3%). Unmarked Topical Theme become the most dominant type of Theme found in the clauses which is realize by verb. It can be inferred that the text were clear and concise which mean that the text were good enough to support the learning objectives. Thus, it was concluded that the text in Chapter 1-8 have good choices of Theme which met the characteristics of a good text to support the learning objectives.
