SKRIPSI DEVELOPING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT MATERIAL USING RUNNING DICTATION GAME TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILL FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Nowadays, English is very important. One of the English skills that should be mastered well is writing skill. It can be a major criterion for a better academic position and greater educational success. Writing skill is important for communication, especially in educational settings. There are many factors that influence a written text if it is good or not such as content, structure, vocabulary, language use and mechanics which must be integrated to be a paragraph. Unfortunately, most students found independent writing difficult. Somehow, they did not know how to start writing a text. Besides, they also lacked vocabulary so they could not develop their paragraphs. It was proven by the average score of the tenth graders of MA AL-Iman Kota Magelang which was only 67.25 while the standard minimum score was 75. The writer observed the textbook of the tenth graders senior high school entitled Bahasa Inggris. The writer focused on chapter 5 “Let’s Visit Niagara Falls.” It provided two examples of descriptive text and the analysis of the structure. However, the exercise was only for reading skills based on the two texts given. Therefore, the writer conducted Research and Development study that was proposed by Gall et al (2003). This research was aimed to know the condition before the material was developed, how to develop the descriptive text material and how effective the developed material is. It was developed by using the Running Dictation Game and the steps were: need analysis, writing performance objective, development of the product, product validation, and final product revision. The index of students’ questionnaire showed 60-74% which meant the students agreed that the condition of the learning process was matched to the criterion in the questionnaire. The teachers’ questionnaire showed 46-86% which meant the respondents disagreed, were unsure and agreed that the used lesson plan was matched to the criterion in the questionnaire. The writer adjusted the existed condition based on the learners’ needs and the assessment to the lesson plan that was used by the English teacher. The writer then developed the descriptive text material based on the students’ and teachers’ questionnaire. While the assessment from the experts, they agreed that the developed material was worthy in the range of 60-80%. Based on the result of experts’ validation, it could be concluded that the descriptive text material and the Running Dictation Game are effective to be used in the range of 60-80%. It also can be used for other teachers to teach the same or different material, skill and level.
