SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF DERIVATIONAL PROCESS AND PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATION IN THE SIGNAL-MAN SHORT STORY BY CHARLES DICKENS

In English learning process, especially reading, derivational process such as suffixes which transforms word into different classes was considered difficult for EFL learners. Inadequate understanding toward suffixes might lead into misconception and misinterpretation. Therefore, recognizing the use of suffixes will help learners to enriched vocabulary mastery and ability to comprehend the text significantly. The objectives of the study are to know the types and the dominant type of derivational process occurred due to the attachment of suffixes found in the Signalman short story by Charles Dickens, in addition to it had pedagogical implications for English Language Teaching. The study was conducted by using qualitative approach with Charles Dickens' Signal-man short story as the data. The instrument used to analyse the data was derivational process of suffix theory proposed by Hurford,Heasley, Smith (2007). The result revealeds that suffix -ly appears in 36 words. Suffix -able(-ible), - en, -ion, -ry, -ness, -y, -ive, -al, -or, -er, -ity, -ous, -ful, -ic, -ment, -ing, -age, -ance, -ish, -ure, -ant, -ate, and -s were also used in the story. Meanwhile, there were 51 data revealed the most dominant type of syntactical process from verb to noun. Throughout the findings, 70.06% of derived words found in the story denote property. Based on the discussion, it can be concluded that suffix -ly, syntactical process of verb to noun, and derived words denoting property were the most frequent sub category in derivational process of suffixes found in the Charles Dickens' Signal-man short story. The understanding of derivational process especially the use of suffixes played an important role in reading comprehension. It significantly gaves contribution for learners to obtained various meaningful interpretations towards many derived words in the short story.
