SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING THE SEMANTIC FIGURATIVE MODE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING: ANALYSIS OF RHETORICAL FIGURES IN VANS INSTAGRAM CAPTIONS

In this research there are three main objectives. The first is to find out the types and functions of Semantic Figurative Mode used in Vans Instagram Captions. The second one is to find out the most dominant type and function of Semantic Figurative Mode that used in Vans Instagram Captions. The third is to find out the types and function of Semantic Figurative Mode used in Vans Instagram Captions that can be implemented in English Language Teaching. To present and analyze the data findings, this research used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was Vans Instagram captions. The unit of analysis were 50 Vans Instagram captions. The techniques used in collecting the data were human instrument, observation table, and distribution of questionnaire. The result shows that there were 48 statements of 50 Vans’ Instagram captions that contain various rhetorical devices. Types of rhetorical figures which was found most frequent is scheme that appear 73%. Meanwhile rhetorical figures of tropes appear 28%. The result of the questionnaires showed that all respondents (4 respondents) said that the knowledge about rhetorical figures can be integrated to English language teaching. They also said that the knowledge of rhetorical figures can help teacher to achieve learning goals in English language teaching and effective to help students achieve learning goals in English language teaching. There were 3 out of 4 respondents who consider that students are able to use rhetorical figures of scheme and tropes in the future. Then, 3 out of 4 respondents have preference in tropes: substitution and destabilization that can be integrated in English language teaching. Most of English vocabularies that are thought in school usually involve formal expression and word choices. Instagram captions can be a remarkable media that inspire the learners to understand distinctive style of English language. It is fun media, though. As the result, teaching and learning process emerges to be unique and effective.
