As stated in the Indonesian education curriculum 2013 revised edition in 2017, the main focus of learning English at the high school level is communicating. So that in each learning material, students are required to be able to communicate using English. However, most of the students spoke using English in their conversation without knowing 'when and what was that sentence or phrase had to use. Most of them just copied it from their book without thinking that the phrase or sentence was suitable for their theme or topic of the conversation. And for understanding conversation gambits better, analyzing gambits will help. This study is intended to know the kind of conversation gambits found in the students‟ dialogue in giving suggestions and offering material by eleventh grades of SMAN 4 Magelang in the academic year of 2019/2020 and to know the most dominant conversation gambits found in the students‟ dialogue in giving suggestions and offering material by eleventh grades of SMAN 4 Magelang in the academic year of 2019/2020. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The writer would describe the data clearly. The focus of this study is on analyzing conversation gambits in the students‟ dialogue performed by eleventh graders of SMA N 4 Magelang in giving suggestions and offering material in the academic years of 2019/2020. In explaining the result of the discussion, the writer used some sentences to describe the use of conversation gambits in eleventh graders of SMA N 4 Kota Magelang. This study shows that three gambits appear in students‟ dialogue. They are opening gambit, linking gambit, and responding gambit. The most used gambit is opening gambits. It appears in forty-nine utterances or as much as 41.5%. Responding gambit comes out forty-eight sentences or as much as 40.7%. At the same time, the rareness used is linking gambits. It appears only in twenty-one utterances or as much as 17.8%. If conversation gambits used in students' daily conversation, it will be beneficial for students. Suppose conversation gambits used in daily conversation, students' diction will be richer and varied. The use of conversation gambit can also help them start the topic if they find difficulties in using English. Their conversation also becomes more natural and smoother. The use of conversation gambits on students‟ dialogue can develop students‟ speaking skills to know and implement the conversation gambits in everyday conversations.
