SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF THE VIOLATION OF MAXIMS BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN NOVEL “THE LIGHTNING THIEF” BY RICK RIORDAN: ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

Maxim is a part of pragmatics study. The used of maxims in conversation is important in order to make a productive and meaningful conversation. Since pragmatics is the study about meaning, maxims are the basic principles of how to construct meaning. However, the listeners tend not to fulfill the maxims in order to make the speakers do not know the truth and only understand the surface meaning which named as the violation of maxims. In another part, on the education background, the teachers still do not teach the students more about pragmatics which make the students cannot give the meaningful or productive response while in teaching and learning process in the classroom.
The writer uses The Lightning Thief novel to be researched in order to analyze the violation of maxims in the main characters’ utterances. The conversation that appears in the novel contains some materials in learning English. It covers the various kind of the violation of maxims and its implications in English language teaching. The objectives of this research are to know the type and most dominant of the violation of maxims that used in the novel and its implication for English language teaching.
This research used descriptive qualitative method which was to described the type of the violation of maxims that used by the main character in The Lightning Thief novel. This research used documentation technique for collecting the data and to analyzing the data. From the result data, the writer concludes that there are four types of the violation of maxims that appeared in the novel used by the main character. There are eight times or 26.67% of violation quantity maxim, six times or 23.33% of violation quality maxim, five times or 16.67% of violation manner maxim and ten times or 33.33% of violation relation maxim.
Based on the data above, it can be assumed that the main character in the novel used four types of the violation of maxims to mislead the listeners. From the data result, the violation of relation maxim is the most dominant used by the main character, in order to avoid the discussion/protract the answer/ and mislead the counterparts. The violation of maxims also gives the contributions for English language teaching. The violation of quantity maxim can be used as a learning material. The violation of quality maxim can be used as a method to make students’ self-esteem increase. The violation of manner maxim can be used to practice students’ critical thinking. The violation of relation maxim can be used as a method to liven up the atmosphere in teaching and learning process. However, by knowing the types, the reasons and the sentence form of violation maxims, the students’ communicative competence which is viewed as the ultimate aim of oral English teaching will be increased.
