SKRIPSI TYPES OF SENTENCES USED IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT WRITTEN BY THE 6th SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF TIDAR UNIVERSITY

The students at the university must be able to improve their writing. Through several writing courses, students in the English Department should have mastered the sentence structure. In fact, students still lack knowledge about grammatical features. the students' problems in writing deals include clauses and conjunction. The findings revealed the factors as the reasons behind those difficulties are lack of practice and grammar incompetence. The writer focuses on types of sentences used in descriptive text written by the 6th semester students of English Department in Tidar University. This paper aims to describe what types of sentences used in the 6th semester students’ descriptive text and to know the most dominant type of sentence. The subject of this research were ten descriptive texts written by the 6th semester students of English Department, Tidar University in which it was selected in term of texts which have complete sentence structures. After all the data were collected, it was analyzed descriptively based on the theory of types of sentences. It is because this research is the descriptive qualitative research. The result revealed that there are 101 types of sentences in 10 descriptive texts that consist of simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence. The simple sentence types is the most dominant type among all types of sentences which appears 73 times or 72.28%. It becomes the most dominant because there is always simple sentence in each students’ descriptive text than other types. The second rank is complex sentence that 21 times or 20.79%. The third is compound sentence which appears 5 times or 4.95%. Then, the last is compound-complex sentence that occurs 2 times or 1.98%. According to the total number of types of sentences used in those descriptive texts, it means that, most of the 6th semester students who write those ten descriptive texts tend to use simple sentence, it is because in simple sentence does not need conjunctions to connect clauses. Therefore, the writer suggests to the English teachers that they should deliver the material about types of sentences from simple to complex, so that the learning objectives of sentence structure can be achieved. For the English learners, they can improve their quality of writing by using sentence varieties from the simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentence.
