SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF VARIABLE REGISTER ON STUDENTS' POSTERS OF TENTH GRADERS IN SMA NEGERI 1 CANDIMULYO IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2020/2021

Poster is one of the outputs of writing contained in the syllabus in the tenth graders. The students are required to understand the meaning contained in the poster. The writer found that the students still have difficulties in analyzing the meaning of the posters. The problem is because students do not know what aspects are analyzed on the posters. This problem is evidenced by the scores obtained by students in the evaluation test of posters material. Most students have not reached the minimum completeness criteria (KKM) set at school. In addition, the teacher has not taught about the aspects that must be analyzed on the posters. The writer is interested to analyze variable register on the posters written by tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo as the data research. There are two objectives in this research. The first objective is to find out the variable register applied on students posters and the second one is to find out the most dominant variable register which consist of field, tenor, and mode on students‟ posters. The research applies descriptive qualitative to analyze variable register on the posters. The data were taken from posters created by tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo. The writer collected the data through documentation and observation, then it found 28 data of posters to be analyzed. The data were analyzed by using variable register based on theory of Hallidayand Hasan. The results show that most of the field is talking about environment. It is found that 20 posters used the environment topic (71%), 4 posters used healthiness topic (14.20%), 3 posters used education topic (10.70%), and 1 poster used society topic (3.57%). On the other hand, all the tenor of the posters were talking about the writer's relationship with the readers. Here, students wrote the posters in order to carry out the intent and purpose of the poster to the readers. While all the mode of the posters was about the type or characteristic of the language used on posters text. It is persuasive language and written. The pedagocical implication is addressed to English education in Senior High School. If the students master variable register, they will understand to analyze the poster meaning. On the other hand, if the students are trained to analyze the contents of the poster using variable register, then the students are understand the questions that are often asked on the test evaluation. Because they are used to practice analyzing the posters‟ meaning, they will be easy to answer the questions on the evaluation test.
