As one of the material supports, textbooks contain some contents that are related to real-life, one of them is dialogue. Dialogues usually contain many features of natural occurring conversation, one of which is preference organization. Preference organization shows that second pair parts or responses have alternative types towards the first pair parts. However, Indonesian researchers seldom examine preference organization in textbook dialogues. Thus the writer decided to investigate how preference organization is presented in dialogues of English textbooks for senior high school. This study focused on the preference organization based on the features. This study uses descriptive qualitative research equipped with a conversation analysis approach. To collect the data, the writer used documentation technique which is gained from ―Bahasa Inggris‖ textbooks published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The results show that there are 105 responses of preference organization in textbook dialogues which are divided into 77 preferred responses, 19 dispreferred responses, and 9 conflicting preferences. It means that preferred responses are the majority response in preference organization. The preferred responses, dispreferred responses, and conflicting preferences are presented with some features to categorize them. Preferred responses are presented with short and straightforward answers, straightforward elaboration answers, composite of short and elaboration answers, appreciation tokens, and news markers. Then, dispreferred responses are exhibited with delay, elaboration, and mitigation, ―pro forma‖ agreement, and news receipt whilst conflicting preferences are displayed with praise downgrade and referent shift. Thus it can be concluded that the dialogues in English textbooks for senior high schools present preference organization like what conversation analysts proposed.
