SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING TABOO UTTERANCES IN BRUNO MARS' SONG LYRICS: IMPLICATION FOR ELT MATERIALS

In this research there are three main objectives. The first is to find out the types of taboo utterances in Bruno Mars song lyrics. The second one is to find out the functions. The third is to find out the most dominant type and function of taboo utterances in Bruno Mars song lyrics. This paper used Batistella (2005) and Wardaugh (2006) theories to analyze taboo utterances. The data analysis procedure was to identify taboo utterances, which include types and functions of taboo utterances, classified taboo utterances, put the data based on the types and functions, and transcribe the data that are focusing on types and functions of taboo utterances. The data displayed in a table to make the readers read easily. In the last step, the writer drew the conclusion based on the data about types and functions of taboo utterances and also the dominant type and function of taboo utterances in Bruno Mars' song lyrics. There were results on this paper. First, there were four types of taboo utterances that happened in Bruno Mars' song lyrics; profanity, obscenity, vulgarity, and epithets. The dominant type of taboo utterances is vulgarity, and the percentage is 41%. Second, there were 3 of 4 functions of taboo utterances that happened in Bruno Mars' song lyrics, the function were drew attention, show contempt, and endearment. The dominant function of taboo utterances is an endearment, and the percentage is 47%. According to the results above, the writer suggests the educators should be aware of the taboo utterances when the learners is still in junior high school. It may lead to misunderstanding, therefore they cannot use it. However, in senior high school, educators may use it but they have to teach that taboo utterances cannot be used in any contexts. In senior high school, educators have to choose song for ELT material with careful consideration.
