SKRIPSI ENGLISH VOWELS ANALYSIS IN DEBATE COMPETITION OF ALSA UI 2017 AND ITS IMPLICATION IN TEACHING SPEAKING

This research is conducted using a descriptive qualitative method with discourse analysis applied. The object of this research is debate competition videos, and the data are the English words consisting of three vowel types found in the videos. This research is purposed to examine the mispronounced vowel sounds by the debate participants and the implication in teaching speaking to the English department students. The research results show that there are only monophthong and triphthong sounds found from the data. There are 11 mispronunciations of monophthong /ɪ/, 2 of monophthong /ə/, 3 of monophthong /ɑː/, and 5 of triphthong /aɪə/. In the videos, the mispronunciation of the vowel sounds is different between one speaker to the others. Moreover, this researcher implicates the research pedagogically. The writer focuses on teaching speaking mainly to the English department students. The teacher may use this research as a reference to teach English vowel sounds to English department students. Besides, the writer suggested to the students that the students are supposed to learn and practice pronouncing English vowel sounds to improve their knowledge and speaking ability whether they also exists in Bahasa Indonesia. It needs drilling and struggling to practice to have better English speaking. Thus, English vowel sounds are one of many essential aspects of learning to speak English because it relates to the pronunciation. The better speaking skill the speakers have will prevent misleading information to the listeners.
