Dialogues in textbooks can be good materials for students to practice their speaking skills and help them to understand what the context of situation and who is taking a part in it which indicate interpersonal metafunctions. However, it is found that the interpersonal relationship represented by the linguistic choices is often ignored in language classroom even in the textbooks which sometimes really need to be paid more attention of the dialogues. Thus the writer decided to investigate how the interpersonal metafunctions in the dialogues are realized in the textbook and how they can reflect the notion of power relations between speakers. This study employed a qualitative research equipped with discourse analysis. To collect the data, the writer used documentation technique by analyzing a textbook for eleventh grade entitled “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XI” published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The data then were analyzed by Halliday and Matthiessen’s Systemic Functional Discourse Analysis theory (2014) to find out the interpersonal metafunctons. Then, to know how the interpersonal metafunctions reflect the notion of power relations, the writer used the theory of Eggins (2004) of types of mood. While the procedure of analysis data was adopted from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2012) which has three steps: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. In specific, the data display was administered by the investigator triangulation. Based on the investigation, this paper revealed that the interpersonal metafunctions in the textbook were categorized into statement (56.04%), question (19.78%), command (19.78%), and offer (4.39%), subsequently. While, the power relations were dominated by declarative mood with 56.04% of the total, then followed by imperative mood (19.78%), wh-interrogative mood (16.48%), and Yes/No interrogative (7.69%). Moreover, it can be concluded that the dialogues in the textbook presented the interpersonal metafunctions which reflected the notion of power relations between the speakers. The results displayed that the statement speech function which was represented by the declarative mood was dominating the interpersonal metafunctions in the dialogues. Thus, the writer suggests the material developers, teachers, and other researchers to take into account the importance of interpersonal metafunctions and various type of power relations in textbooks.
