Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Online Class Learning, Social Cognition. Nowadays, discourse spreads among the media in a short period of time.
Most of the discourses spread among the media are produced by public figures. As a matter of fact, the policy of online educational programs in this pandemic was initiated by Nadiem Makarim, the current Indonesian Minister of Education. As a public figure in Indonesian education, every discourse by Nadiem relates to the social context that may influence the educational section in Indonesia powerfully. Most Critical Discourse Analysis studies conducted by other researchers are limited only to linguistics study and a bit of them related it toward educational aspects such as the teaching-learning process. This case becomes a reason to conduct CDA research and relate its implication toward the educational aspect specifically toward the online class teaching process in a form of learning material for sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and semantics courses. This study used a qualitative critical discourse analysis research design. The object of this research is Nadiem Makarim’s speech video in the webinar Educating the Nation year 2020. The video was uploaded on the Youtube channel by Jakarta Post as the owner of this webinar. This webinar was streamed live on August 12th, 2020. The technique of data collection for this research is documentation. The data of this research was obtained from the transcription of Nadiem’s speech in the Webinar Educating the Nation video. The writer used theoretical triangulation and expert validation to validate the data of this study. The finding and discussion of this research revealed that each discourse structure was involved in the speech. The discourse structures found are the macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure, including every part of them. The social cognition reflected by Nadiem within his speech consists of knowledge, opinion, ideology, and attitude. The result of Nadiem’s speech CDA could be applied to sociolinguistics and socio-pragmatics courses as a learning material since certain CDA elements match the RPS of those courses.
