SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE OF EFL: SPEAKING ANXIETY ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ PRACTICE ON PUBLIC SPEAKING VIRTUAL CLASS

The purpose of learning language is to be able to communicate with others. By speaking, people can deliver and receive the messages. As an EFL learners, speaking is an important part to them because it shows that they master the English. However, some of EFL learners say that speaking skill makes them worried. There are still lot of students who are afraid of practicing their speaking in front of people. It caused by their speaking anxiety. The aims of this study were to discover the factors that contributed to students’ speaking anxiety at Public Speaking virtual class and to explore the strategies used by students to overcome the speaking anxiety at Public Speaking virtual class. In this study, English Departments students became the subject of the research. There were 71 students who ever joined the Public Speaking virtual class as the respondents of the FLCAS Questionnaire adapted by Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1986) and 10 interviewees in the interview section. Then, the data results were analyzed based on the theory of Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1986) and validated by using methodological triangulation based on Denzin (as cited in Hales 2010). The result of this study indicated that the students were having the speaking anxiety during the public speaking virtual class and the students had their own strategies to overcome the problems. The factors of the students’ speaking anxiety were classified into three major factors, those are; communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. While for the strategies used by the students were classified into four major strategies, those are; peer seeking, preparation, positive thinking, and relaxation. However, even the students have their way to overcome the problem, they still need the lecturers’ role to help them to decrease their speaking anxiety.
