In terms of education, teachers are not only the primary source of knowledge. Lots of teachers use a textbook as the teaching materials. The textbook contains materials and examples of text. However, comprehending materials, such as genre which is commonly presented in the reading section is not an easy task. Students still get difficulties in learning the text. Thus, the text needs to be cohesive to make the students easier in comprehending the text. The text’s cohesiveness can be seen through Thematic Progression which is used by the textbook writers in constructing the text. Therefore, the writer decided to investigate Thematic Progression in the English textbook’s reading text to know the cohesiveness of the text. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of Thematic Progression patterns used in the reading text of the tenth graders English textbook and to find out the dominant type of Thematic Progression pattern used in the reading text of the tenth graders English textbook. This research used descriptive qualitative method. To gain the data, the writer used documentation. The data were collected from the Kemdikbud catalogue book taken from the official website of Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan Balitbang Kemdikbud. The data were analyzed based on the theory of Thematic Progression by Eggins (2004). The result shows that three types of Thematic Progression patterns are used in the reading text of the tenth graders English Textbook. They are Theme Reiteration Pattern, Zig-zag Pattern, and Multiple Theme Pattern. There were total 186 Thematic Progression pattern used in the reading text. The dominant type of Thematic Progression is Theme Reiteration Pattern with 92 occurrences (50%), followed by Zig-zag Pattern with 90 occurrences (48%), and Multiple Theme Pattern with 4 occurrences (2%). The writer suggests to the teacher to give more attention to the materials given to the students by considering the cohesion of the text and also teach reading using Thematic Progression since it can stimulate students’ reading ability in understanding the text.
