SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING PLAGIARISM ON RESEARCH PROPOSAL WRITTEN BY THE SEVENTH-SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT TIDAR UNIVERSITY

The phenomenon of plagiarism is often found in the world of education, mainly at the university level. In writing assignment, the students only copy and paste a sentence or text from other's work and presenting as their work, without mentioning the sources. This research investigated students' plagiarism in a research proposal. The writer chooses this topic because of the act of plagiarism commonly found in the writing task. This research focused on exploring the types of plagiarism conducted by the seventh-semester students of the English department and the factors that influence them to commit plagiarism in writing a research proposal. The writer had the purpose of analyzing the type of plagiarism and factor that affect the student to commit plagiarism in the students of English Department at Tidar University. The method of research which is used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The participants were purposively selected; they are seventh-semester students English department who took research project seminar major, mainly class 2. The data collection was carried out using two research instruments: documentation (research proposal suspected plagiarism) to check the research proposal used Turnitin and transcript of the interview. The data obtained from the interviews and documentation were transcribed and analyzed. Five research proposals were examined, and five participants were interviewed. The study showed three significant plagiarism types commited by the students, including patchwriting, inappropriate paraphrasing, and summaries. The interview results showed four major factors that encourage them to commit plagiarism; shortage of books, poor academic writing skills (referencing and citation), student laziness, and the internet. However, other factors are carelessness in doing research proposals and insufficient management time. Besides, all students understand what plagiarism is, but it does not help them to avoid plagiarism. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the students' awareness of avoiding plagiarism in writing a research proposal should be increased to improve their academic writing quality, especially their research proposal
