SKRIPSI ENGLISH DIPHTHONGS PRONOUNCED BY EFL LEARNERS IN ENGLISH HOSPITALITY CLASS AT UNIVERSITAS TIDAR

Diphthongs are one of the most challenging areas to learn in English phonology class because EFL learners in English Hospitality classes at Tidar University tend to use their accents. Students' mother tongue strongly influences it. Else, they are EFL learners and their educational background is English education program, therefore, they should be more prudent and appropriate to handle their mother tongue when they speak in English as foreign language (FL). This study is aimed to find out what English diphthongs are challenging to be pronounced by EFL learners in the English Hospitality class of Universitas Tidar and to analyze the percentage of the mispronunciation of English diphthongs by EFL learners in the English Hospitality class at Universitas Tidar. Qualitative descriptive research approach is applied in this study. The subject of the research was 38 EFL learners in English hospitality class at Universitas Tidar. The research was done in Universitas Tidar. There are centering and closing diphthongs as unit of the analysis. Documentation was the technique to collect the data. The writer collected the data of the students‟ video clips as a source. To analyze the data, the writer used descriptive method, and there are four steps as; 1) collected the video clips then transcribed students‟ utterances, 2) identified diphthongs by Roach (2009) theory, 3) analyzed it used PRAAT, and 4) counted the percentage of students‟ mispronunciation. The result shows that The English diphthongs that are challenging to be pronounced by EFL learners involve the closing diphthong /əʊ/, /eɪ/, /aʊ/, and /aɪ/. Meanwhile, the challenging centering diphthongs to be pronounced by the learners are /ɪə/ and /ʊə/. The percentage of mispronounced English diphthongs committed by the EFL learners of English Hospitality class at Universitas Tidar varies from 0%-65%. It would be great for teacher to optimize phonology teaching activities so students will have better understanding about diphthong and able to pronounce diphthong correctly.
