Language is a form of human communication. Language is necessary for humans because it expresses one's thoughts and feelings as a human. Writing is one of four basic language skills, it is the most complex and has a critical component. Therefore, this study assists teachers and students in developing a more in-depth understanding of writing coherently. There are two main objectives of this research. The first is to describe the coherence in comparison and contrast essay written by the fourth semester students of the English Department at Tidar University. The second is to find out which dominant type of coherence ways used in the students’ comparison and contrast essay based on Oshima and Hogue’s theory (2006). The type of this research was qualitative research. The data were analyzed by qualitative content analysis proposed by Mayring (2014). The data was taken from 22 comparison and contrast essays written by 22 students of fourth semester EFL students at Tidar University in the academic year 2019/2020. This research used documentation as the technique for collecting the data. The total number of coherence ways is 2202, which includes 18.39% repeating key noun, 15.39% consistent pronoun, 51.07% transitional signal, 14.12% logical order, and 1% error. It is clear that transitional signals are the most commonly used on students' comparison and contrast essays. Furthermore, the students demonstrated strong proficiency in producing coherence in their comparison and contrast essays because they used all types of coherence methods in their essays. However, the students' essays still contain numerous errors, the majority of which are related to the use of transitional signals. The study's implication is aimed at college EFL students. Improving the coherence ways used can improve the writing quality of EFL students. Students would overcome the difficulties they face in arranging sentences or paragraphs of the essay if they understood how to achieve coherence in writing. As a result, students can fine-tune their writing activities.
