SKRIPSI CONJUNCTIVE ADJUNCTS IN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS BY THE FIFTH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF EDUCATION AND TEACHERS TRAINING AT TIDAR UNIVERSITY

Writing presents a significant challenge for most students in the academic context, especially at university level. Students are required to write several types of essays, one of them is argumentative essay. Students have to be aware of organization of idea and coherence, such as using conjunctive adjuncts. They have purposes of presenting and supporting explanations and arguments for readers. There are two objectives in this research. The first is to find out types of conjunctive adjuncts. The second one is to find out dominant type of conjunctive adjuncts in argumentative essays written by the fifth semester of English Department at Tidar University. The research applies descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from 27 argumentative essays by the fifth semester students of English Department. The technique of collecting data is documentation. The data were analyzed using theory of Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). The results show that there are 133 conjunctive adjuncts in 27 argumentative essays. The first rank is adversatives which occurs 35 times or 26, 31%. The next is causal conditional and additive which have the same number occurrences that are 26 or 19.55%. While temporal adjuncts occurs 23 times or 17, 30%. Moreover, students use summative 12 times or 9,02%, appositive 7 times or 5,27% and the last verificative 4 times or 3,00%. These present that the most common type of conjunctive adjunct is adversative. This research is expected to be useful for students in making a coherent paragraph and can be a reference for other researches. Furthermore, lecturers should explain and familiarize students with list of conjunctive adjuncts.
