The reference takes a role in communication, and it helps to convey information. Therefore, techniques are needed to improve EFL learners' speaking skills. One of the techniques is storytelling. Storytelling is the act of delivering a story. To convey the story, it should be understandable for the audience. So that, the use of the reference may help the speakers to deliver the story as smoothly as possible and as easier to be understood as possible. In delivering the story, learners were still read the text, which mean they did not deliver the story in their style. They were even afraid to speak because they were afraid of making mistakes. So the writer conducted this study. This study focused on finding out what type of references were used in learners’ storytelling and the most dominant type used in learners' storytelling. A qualitative descriptive research approach was applied in this study. The Source of the data was videos of learners' storytelling delivered in English, downloaded from youtube. Here, the writer was the instrument of the study. Documentation was the technique to collect the data. The steps were: 1) read and comprehend all of the transcribed forms of learners' storytelling video, 2) identified the words or phrases, and 3) classified the words or phrases into anaphora, cataphora, and ellipsis. To analyze the data, the writer used the model of analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). There are three steps: data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. Data validation used in this study was triangulation. Thus, they were observation and documentation. The result shows that cataphoric and anaphoric reference was used in learner's storytelling. The kinds of anaphoric were pronominal anaphora, prepositional anaphora, temporal anaphora, and kind-level anaphora. Pronominal anaphora, which appeared as much as 117 times, is the most dominant type used in learners’ storytelling. Based on the result, the writer suggests that English teachers pay more attention to the use of reference. It may be helpful for the students to improve their ability in speaking. Students are supposed to practice storytelling in English more often and implement references in their speaking. It will be beneficial for them in which they may be more fluent in speaking English.
