SKRIPSI THE ANALYSIS OF GAMBITS USED IN NUDC 2020 NOVICE GRAND FINAL AND ITS IMPLICATION IN TEACHING SPEAKING

Gambits are important in communication because they can help people to express what they want to say about something. By using gambits, the students can make their speech sound natural without silence. In teaching speaking, gambit is used to enhance the student’s speaking ability. Moreover, in teaching speaking, the teacher needs an effective activity that can help the students improve their speaking skills. One of the speaking activities that the teachers can use is debate. In this case, the use of gambits in debate activity is an effective way since gambit can support the students to deliver what they want to say. There are three objectives in this research. The first is to find out the types of gambits used in NUDC 2020 Novice Grand Final. The second is to investigate the functions of gambits used in NUDC 2020 Novice Grand Final. And the last is to know the implication of gambits used in NUDC 2020 Novice Grand Final in teaching speaking. The writer conducted descriptive qualitative research in this study. The object of this study is utterances by debaters in a video debate competition from YouTube entitled NUDC 2020 Novice Grand Final. To gain the data, the writer used documentation. Based on the result of this study, it is indicated that first, there were three types of gambit that the debaters used in their utterances, namely opening, linking, and responding gambits. Second, the writer also found four functions of gambits that the debaters used in their utterances. The gambits used in NUDC 2020 Novice Grand Final have functions as introductory semantics, the social context’s sign, a signal for a person’s awareness, and as management of communication. From the result of types and functions of gambits, the writer found the implications of gambits used in NUDC 2020 Novice Grand Final in teaching speaking. In the last chapter, the writer gives suggestions to the English teachers to use debate as the activity in speaking class to improve the students’ communicative competence. By knowing the gambits that can be used in debate activity, it can help students deliver speech fluently and clearly. Moreover, the writer suggests the English learners to learn and explore more about gambits used in debate activity. Hence, gambits can support them to speak more fluent and natural when delivering speech in debate activity.
