SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF READING TASKS IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK ENTITLED ‘BAHASA INGGRIS’ FOR THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Textbook is one of the media to support a teaching-learning process for the students and teachers. Textbook presents the materials and a source for learners to practice and do activities such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, listening, reading, speaking, and writing in the classroom. Students have difficulty following the reading activities in the classroom, it causes the students are less interested and makes the students are not comprehending the text because the students do not know the purpose of reading itself. In addition, teachers should pay attention to the reading task in textbook. The objectives of this study were to explain the purpose from each reading task in the textbook and analyze the types of reading tasks from the textbook and what type of reading task that is mostly found based on the types of reading task proposed by Brown (2004). The object of this study was an English textbook entitled ‘Bahasa Inggris’ for the tenth grade students of senior high school which consists of 15 chapters. This study was a qualitative research as a type of research. The writer applied descriptive qualitative content analysis. The writer gained the data from the reading tasks in the textbook. As the results, there are 57 reading tasks and 8 types of reading task found in the textbook, but there are 2 different types of reading task in one task. Each reading task has different purpose depends on the types of reading task. The types in the textbook are Reading Aloud (Perceptive Reading) which purposed to develop the interactional communication and recognize the sentence orally, Matching Task (Selective Reading) which purposed to check the students’ understanding towards the new words and correct pronouns, Editing Task (Selective Reading) which purposed to check the students’ understanding towards the correct tense, Gap-Filling Task (Selective Reading) which purposed to check the students’ understanding towards the new vocabularies and the grammar related to the material, Short-Answer Task (Interactive Reading) which purposed to check the students’ text comprehension, Scanning (Interactive Reading) which purposed to find relevant information such as name, place, setting, etc., Ordering Task (Interactive Reading) which purposed to order the sentence by paying attention to the text structure, and Information Transfer (Interactive Reading) which purposed to give understanding to find the similarities and differences of the two texts. In addition, the most type of reading task which found in the textbook is short answer task. The number of short answer tasks in the textbook is 24 tasks out of 57 reading tasks.
