SKRIPSI ENHANCING STUDENTS WRITING SKILLS THROUGH DISCOVERY LEARNING MODEL OF EXPLANATION TEXT IN VIRTUAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING CLASSROOM

Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the learning process this pandemic will make many changes, both in terms of learning methods and in terms of assessment especially in writing. The eleventh graders still find difficulties in learning writing, especially in explanation text. The result of the eleventh graders of SMAN 3 Magelang is under the standard minimum of mastery learning grade that is 75. There are two objectives of this research. The first is to know whether the use of the Discovery learning method enhance the students' activeness of the explanation text writing skills of the eleventh graders of SMAN 3 Kota Magelang. The second to know how significant the enhancement of students' writing skills who are taught by discovery learning as reflective practices in English language teaching. The writer conducted a classroom action research. The subject of the research is Eleventh graders of IPA 1 in SMAN 3 Kota Magelang in the school year 2020/2021. There were 36 students. It is divided into Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, Cycle II. To collect the data, the writer used test and non-test (observation, questionnaire, and documentation). Based on the analysis, it shows that there is also the improvement of students’ activeness after the writer taught the writing class using discovery learning strategy. The students show a good improvement in learning process.The mean score in Pre-Cycle test is 64.6. It belongs to fair category. In Cycle I test, the mean of score is 71.13 it belongs to good category. In Cycle II test, the mean score is 77.97 it belongs to good category. The improvement form Pre-Cycle test to Cycle II is 13.19 points. In conclusion, the use of Discovery learning in writing explanation text can improve the students’ learning activeness and students’ writing skill of the explanation text writing skill. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers use Discovery learning as an alternative strategy in teaching writing explanation text.
