SKRIPSI INTEGRATING MALL OF EFL LEARNERS: STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVE ON SMARTPHONE USAGE OF VIRTUAL CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Along with the enormous growth of smartphone, it relates to the language teaching and learning approach that has been replaced into Mobile Learning which is called MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning). Hence, both of the lecturers and students can make the teaching method more modern by sending materials and assignments virtually. Also, the students can use all the applications on smartphones to encourage their skills in language learning. Additionally, the learning process can be conducted without having face-to-face in the classroom (virtual classroom) by using a smartphone. This research explores the students’ perspective as EFL learners toward the use of smartphones and the benefits of smartphone usage due to Covid-19 pandemic in integrating MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) at Universitas Tidar. Further, this research attempts to find out the research questions: (1) How are the seventh semester students’ perspective as EFL learners when using their smartphone to learn English through virtual classroom activities in integrating MALL? and (2) How are the benefits of smartphone usage in learning English through virtual classroom? It is a qualitative descriptive research which used two instruments which are online questionnaire and interview. The subject of this research was the seventh semester students of English Education Department in the academic year 2020/2021. There were 111 total number of the students. The result showed that the students who believe about smartphone can be used to assist their learning are almost 99% from the total of the students. Especially, in the situation of pandemic which necessitates the students to use their own smartphone in assisting language learning. Hence, the students could join the virtual classroom easily since the smartphone can be brought everywhere and every time. In fact, the students give positive response toward the use of smartphones. It is very helpful and useful as EFL Learners to conduct a virtual classroom activity at this era in integrating MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning). In conclusion, both of the data result from online questionnaire and interview indicate that the seventh semester students of English Education Department in the academic year 2020/2021 at Universitas Tidar as EFL Learners have positive responses toward the use of smartphones in integrating MALL and the benefits of smartphone usage due to Covid-19 pandemic.
