Nowadays, English has a vital role in international interaction since English is a global language. However, while learning a second language (L2), there will be some interference that can appear. One example of difficulties students face was phrasal verbs, as it is also supported by statements that say that "Phrasal verbs are one of the most difficult items of language to teach and learn" (Gardner & Davies, 2007, p. 340). As a result, some students still avoid using phrasal verbs in their daily writing or speaking since they lack knowledge about that form. This research aims to know the types and the most used phrasal verb in the first American debate 2020. The researcher used a discourse analysis research approach. The object in this research was the phrasal verbs which are spoken by Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and Chris Wallace in the first American presidential debate 2020. In this research, the instrument was the researcher himself, while documentation was the technique to collect the data. To analyze the data, the researcher used Creswell (2007, p. 148) method. The steps were: preparing the data, organizing the data, and representing the data. In order to get the trustworthiness of the data, the researcher used investigator triangulation. The results showed that phrasal verbs were used in the first American presidential debate in 2020. There were 328 phrasal verbs found in the debate. According to their types, there are 105 intransitive phrasal verbs, 139 transitive separable phrasal verbs, and 85 transitive inseparable phrasal verbs. Therefore, the transitive separable phrasal verb was the most frequently used in the first American debate 2020 since it appeared 139 times. The researcher suggests the teachers to give additional information about the phrasal verbs to their students. Furthermore, teachers need to provide a chance to practice and also give solutions when students are struggling in learning phrasal verbs. For the students, this research can be additional information for them to improve their knowledge about phrasal verbs and also make them more fluent in speaking English.
