SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF IDIOM TRANSLATION TECHNIQUE USED BY THIRD SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF TIDAR UNIVERSITY

Translation is the rendering of a source language (SL) text into the target language (TL) so as to ensure that (1) the surface meaning of the two will be approximately similar and (2) the structures of the SL will be preserved as closely as possible but not so closely that the TL structures will be seriously distorted (Bassnet, 2002). The objectives of the study are: (1) determine the kinds of translation techniques used to translate idioms by third semester students of English Department of Tidar University. (2) find the technique that is mostly used to translate idioms by the third semester students of English Department of Tidar University. This study belongs to qualitative research. The data is the translation works done by the third semester students of English department at Tidar University. The researcher analyzed the idiom translation techniques used by the third semester students. The results of the study shows that the translation techniques that is used are amplification 6.64%, deletion 18.18%, adaptation 34.61%, discursive creation 36.71%, generalization 2.79%, and literal translation techniques 1.05%. None used substitution, description, particularization, and transposition translation technique 0% with discursive creation as the most used translation technique with 36.71%.
