SKRIPSI VIRTUAL LEARNING MEDIA IN ONLINE ESSAY WRITING CLASS: THE STUDENTS' PERCEPTION

Writing is one of the four fundamental skills in English. Especially for English department students, writing becomes a skill that should be mastered. As English department students, the ability to write essays, papers, journal articles, and thesis in English is required. The existence of Covid-19 Pandemic had affected the regulation of the education that should be conducted via online. This situation encourages the student to adapt to the new atmosphere but also the media and the methodology in the learning process. Essay writing becomes the one of the subjects that is conducted via online by using virtual learning. This condition is also different from the previous year that essay writing is followed by offline system. In this case, the various perception toward virtual learning media in online essay writing emerged. Hence, the writer decided to investigate students’ perception toward virtual learning media in online essay writing class. The subject of the research is the fifth semester of the English Department in Universitas Tidar that consists of 30 students. This study used case study with a descriptive qualitative approach by employing questionnaire, interview, and documentation as the data collection techniques. The writer conducted the questionnaire which consisted of 21 items to 30 respondents and did the interview to 5 interviewees. Then, the data results were analyzed based on the theory of Miles, Huberman, & Saldana (2014) and were validated by using data triangulation according to Denzin (1970). The result of this study showed that the respondents perceived the usefulness of virtual learning media in online essay writing class. The use of virtual learning media in online essay writing class has given benefits for the students in terms of flexibility in time and space, ease of access to resources, direct interaction between students and lecturer, etc. Besides that, the use of virtual learning media in online essay writing class has given the challenges for students such as needing a more stable signal, spending a lot of quota, lecturer sound is unclear, not all students get feed-back from the lecturer, etc. Therefore, the improvement of lecturer’ strategy was needed to make the students become active, responsive and involved during the learning process.
