SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF THE STUDENTS' PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE IN AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY WRITING

In writing an essay, the essay cannot be separated with paragraph structure. It is important for students to understand what paragraph structure is. Paragraph structure can help the students in writing an argumentative essay become a good, organized, measurable, and easy-to-read text. Also, at the college level, understanding the paragraph structure of an essay is an important aspect that students need to gain good grades in academic essay classes. This research focuses on the students' overall paragraph structure in writing an argumentative essay and the suitability of the students' argumentative text content with the paragraph structure written by the fifth-semester students at Tidar University. The objectives of the study are: 1. to know the students' overall paragraph structure in writing an argumentative essay and 2) to know the suitability of the students' argumentative text content with the paragraph structure. The method of research used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The research subject of this study was the fifteen students' argumentative essays of the English Department of Tidar University in 2020/2021. The data collection was carried out using documentation and to check the argumentative essay used the checklist criteria of paragraph structure. The research showed five students made errors in essay organization, five students in paragraph organization, twelve students in sentences structure, and fourteen students in grammar and mechanics. Moreover, there was five students that the suitability of argumentative text content with the paragraph structure was still bad because the students did not create a block pattern or point-by-point pattern. Besides, all students understand how to write an argumentative essay. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the students understanding of writing an argumentative essay should be increased to improve their academic writing quality, especially in their essay writing class. Generally, all essays contained the four criteria: essay organization, paragraph organization, sentence structure, and grammar and mechanics. On the other hand, five students were still bad at writing argumentative essay texts because the content did not match the paragraph structure. Overall, the argumentative criteria that have been utilized to build the argument can reflect how the student's thought. The fifthsemester students of the essay writing class already knew how to write an argumentative essay with the paragraph structure of argumentative essay.
