The writer tries to analyse the compound words used in the narrative text written by the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Grabag in the academic year 2018/2019. The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the type of compound words used in narrative text written by the tenth graders' students of Bahasa in SMA Negeri 1 Grabag (2) to find the dominant type of the compound words used in narrative text written by the tenth graders' students of Bahasa in SMA Negeri 1 Grabag. This study is descriptive qualitative; it allows the writer to analyse the data found in the students' narrative text. The subject of this study was the narrative text written by the tenth graders of BAHASA in SMA Negeri 1 Grabag in the academic year 2018/2019. The writer took 27 narrative texts, which were analysed and collected by using the documentary technique. The result revealed that the total number of compound words is 42, divided into three types of compound words. Those are 32 endocentric compounds (76.19%), two exocentric compounds (4.76%), and eight copulative compounds (19.05%). Therefore, the dominant type of compound word is the endocentric compound; it becomes the most prevalent type because it is a compound that can be predicted from the rightmost word. The pedagogical implication of the research is addressed to English education in senior high school. Understanding the types of compound words is very important in learning. It is about how the words are formed from two or more words that conjoin together. When the students understand a compound word, they will improve their vocabulary regarded as a compound word.
