Authentic assessment of speaking skills is needed to determine the progress and abilities of students during the process of learning to speak. Malley argues that one of the main responsibilities in working with English learners is to enable students to communicate effectively through spoken language (Malley & Pierce, 1996). As a result, students often measure their success in language learning as well as how proficient they are before and after taking English classes, especially in spoken communication. This study aims to determine the type of authentic assessment of speaking skills and how teachers apply authentic assessment of speaking skills in online classes at SMAN 1 Salaman. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive analysis approach. The subjects in this study were three English teachers at SMAN 1 Salaman. In this study, the instruments are documentation and interviews. To analyze the data, the researcher used the Creswell (2012) method. The steps were: data preparation, data organization, and data presentation. To get the validity of the data, the researcher used triangulation method. The results show that the type of authentic assessment of speaking skills that has been applied by English teachers is to use performance assessment. While the implementation is that English teachers have divided the implementation process into three activities, namely initial activities, core activities and final activities. In the initial activity, the teacher opened an online class with prayer and motivation. In the core activity, the teacher assesses the students' speaking ability. The teacher brings an assessment rubric as an assessment guide. At the end of the activity, the teacher closed the online class by providing feedback, reminding the material at the upcoming meeting and praying. Researchers suggest teachers to have deep insight and understanding regarding authentic assessment so that the assessment process in online classes can run efficiently. For students, they have to be more active during online classes and be able to maximize themselves during the assessment process. By doing so, the assessment process will take place optimally.
