SKRIPSI ANALYSIS OF CONVERSATIONAL STYLE IN LEARNING ENGLISH TALKSHOW WITH FOOTBALL STAR DAVID BECKHAM AND ITS IMPLICATION TO SPEAKING SKILL LEARNING

Nowadays, the application of conversational style is easily found in direct conversation and every online media. In this digital era, plenty of programs within the media provides the dialogue between people, such as in television news report, YouTube videos, and many other media. One of the popular videos from Learn English Online YouTube channel is the talk show video with David Beckham as a guest star and a famous person. Conversational style in learning English talk show with Football Star David Beckham and its implication to speaking skill was motivated by the lacks of the students about conversational style. Learning the analysis of conversational style contributes to students' speaking skills since it deals with the conversation, and the conversation itself also becomes a part of the speaking. When the students can apply the conversational style properly within speaking, it can enhance their speaking skills further. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. The object of this research was the conversational style found in Learning English Talk Show with David Beckham video. The writer himself was the instrument for collecting, analysing and interpreting the data obtained for this research. The data was collected using the documentation technique and then analysed according to Miles (2014), such as data condensation, data display, and conclusion. The theory used was Yule's (1996) and Tannen's (2005) conversational style. The validation of the data used expert validation to consider the validity of the data. The result of this study revealed that turn-taking occurred 25 times in the talk show (67.5%). The overlapping occurred nine times (24.3%), pause occurred twice (5.5%), and interruption occurred once (2.7%). The most dominant type was turn-taking since it was the basis of conversation. The implication of conversational style toward speaking skill learning is related to the macro skill of speaking by Brown (2015), specifically toward the use of appropriate communicative functions according to situations, participants, and goals and also toward the use of appropriate registers, pragmatic conventions, and other sociolinguistic features in face-to-face conversations.
