Corona virus changes several aspects of life including education that should be conducted via online. In online learning this condition empowered the students to adapt not only to a new atmosphere but also the media and methodology in teaching and learning process. In online learning there are many changes to the learning method used, but many courses still use project-based learning as a learning method. Seminar Project Proposal was one of the subjects which also conducted virtual project-based learning. The online learning causes students to work and present their project virtually.
In this case, various advantages and challenges to virtual project-based learning may emerge. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore the perspectives of English Department students on virtual project based learning in the Seminar Project Proposal course and to find out what advantages and challenges they get. The research was conducted at Tidar University with the research subjects being students of the English Department in seventh semester, in academic year 2021/2022 who had taken a virtual Seminar Project Proposal course. This research method employed a descriptive study as a type of qualitative, approach using questionnaire as a data collection technique. The writer conducted questionnaire containing 10 questions to 10 respondents from 2 different classes. Then, the data results were analyzed based on Noor et al. (2019) and Gunawan et al. (2020), and validated using data validation according to Moleong (2014:331).
The results of this study indicate that respondents get advantages from virtual project-based learning class such as being more confident in virtual presentations, working on projects better, flexibility in time and place, and high efficiency. On the other hand, respondents also faced challenges from virtual project-based learning class such as challenges to internet connections, virtual learning process, and the use of technology. Although there are some challenges that they have to face, but they got through and handled it well, because they also have their own way to overcome these challenges.
It can be concluded that all respondents felt that they had advantages and also challenges to virtual project-based learning in the Seminar Project Proposal course. However, they have ways of overcome the challenges they faced. However, it is not good enough to overcome these challenges. Therefore, strategy improvement is needed so that students are more active, responsive, and involved during the virtual learning process.
