SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING AMBIGUITY FOUND IN THE LOVE SIMON FILM DIALOGUES: SEMANTICS STUDIES ON ELT MATERIALS

This study was conducted to share ambiguity of Love Simon movie. The writer analysed kinds of ambiguity on Love Simon movie. The objectives of this study were to describe ambiguity kinds and find out the dominant kind of ambiguity on Love Simon movie script in investigating semantics studies of English Foreign Language learners as ELT material. This study was descriptive qualitative research. This study used theories of Kempson in Resmini (2009:92-93) about the kinds of Ambiguity. The procedure of data analysis to identify ambiguity kinds, classify ambiguity, put the data on the table based on the kinds, and transcribe the data that focusing on kinds of ambiguity. The data displayed in a table, in order to help the readers read easily. And the last step, the writer drew the conclusion based on the data about kinds and functions of ambiguity and also the dominant kinds of ambiguity on Love Simon. There were two results on this study. First, there were 3 kinds of ambiguity based on Kempson in Resmini (2009:92-93) which appeared on Love Simon movie. They are phonological, lexical, and grammatical ambiguity. There are 22 ambiguities found. the dominant kind of ambiguity that is lexical ambiguity with 17 ambiguities found; the percentage is 77%, and followed by grammatical ambiguity with 4 ambiguities found; the percentage is 18%, and phonological ambiguity as the last position with only 1 ambiguity found; the percentage is 5%. According to the results above, the writer expected that English language learners who are studying semantics about ambiguity can understand in detail the kinds of ambiguity. The teacher can use example of ambiguity in learning process because it can help the learners how to interpreted ambiguous meaning. The English language learners can use the kinds of ambiguity in a certain environment to improve their speaking-listening skills and enrich their vocabulary of target language.
