The learning method is an important aspect of the learning process, especially in writing skill. The role of educators in teaching and learning activities must be able to realize active and innovative learning. It means that students have to join the learning activities favorably. The teacher had various ways of teaching and learning process, one of them is the Discovery learning method that expects the students to discover the facts of the topic through observing and experimenting activities because the teacher does not present them at the beginning of the lesson directly. However, the students faced many challenges during the learning process. In this case, various perspectives about the Discovery learning method might emerge. The purposes of this research were to explore the students’ perception of the Discovery learning method in writing narrative text class and to explore the challenges and benefits they got from it. The research was conducted at SMA N 1 Grabag with the subjects being the students of eleventh-graders in Bahasa class in the school year 2021/2022 who had joined English class. An exploratory case study with a descriptive qualitative approach was used by employing questionnaires and interviews as the data collection techniques. The writer created the questionnaire which consisted of 17 items to 31 respondents and did the interview to 5 interviewees. The data results were analyzed based on the theory of Miles et al (2014) and were validated by using data validation according to Denzin (1970). The results of this study indicated that the respondents perceived an improvement of their activeness during the learning process. The students used to be confident to express their ideas, looking for the learning materials, and using the technology to support their learning. The implementation of the Discovery learning method has given challenges to the students in terms of the limitation of learning duration and vocabulary mastery. The students also got benefits in terms of improvement of their writing in English. It can be concluded most of the respondents gave positive judgments toward the implementation of the Discovery learning method in writing narrative text class. Nonetheless, there were still problems found in this study that affected the material mastery during the learning process. Therefore, the improvement of the teacher’s strategy and students’ activeness was needed.
