SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILL (HOTs) REALIZATION OF READING TASKS IN ENGLISH STUDENTS’ TEXTBOOK

A textbook has an important role in teaching learning process. Many critics and suggestions come out about textbook used. Some of those critics and suggestions say that the textbook could be improved by having varied exercises or tasks, fluency practicing the four basic language skill, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and giving more emphasis on the problem solving and the higher order cognitive process. The writer conducted a research to overcome that problem by analysing the textbook used. There are two main objectives in the research. The first is to know the distribution of higher order thinking skill in reading exercise of “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XII Edisi revisi 2018. The second is to know what extent are reading questions in “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XII Edisi revisi 2018” in line with HOTs (Higher Order Thinking skill) based on revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The writer conducted a descriptive qualitative research. Use content analysis method to identify specified characteristic of the materials in the textbook, particularly the reading comprehension exercises in the “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XII Edisi revisi 2018”. The subject of the research is textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XII Edisi revisi 2018” Based on the data findings, it can be concluded that only 19 or 22% reading questions in this book belong to higher-level cognitive dimension. Meanwhile, only 26 or 30% reading questions belong to higher-level knowledge dimension. In cognitive aspect, most HOTs questions belong to level Analyze. Meanwhile in knowledge dimension, most HOTs questions belong to conceptual knowledge. Therefore, HOTs reading questions in this book require students to relate one part to another such as differentiating, organizing and ditributing. Majority of reading questions in this book belong to lower-level thinking skill in level Understand (cognitive dimension) and factual knowledge.
