SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION IN ELT: READING ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT DURING THE VIRTUAL CLASS IN HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION

One significant impact caused by COVID-19 is in the educational systems. Many schools and universities closed during the pandemic, and the teaching and learning process must be done from home. In the online learning activities, difficulties are not avoidable. The writer found out that senior high school students have many problems, especially in reading analytical exposition text. Therefore, the writer decides to investigate the students’ perception of reading analytical exposition text during the virtual class in high school education, especially the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 5 Kota Magelang. This research used descriptive qualitative research, and sample subject of this research is XI MIPA 3 that consists of 34 students. To gain the data, the writer applied observations and a questionnaire. The observations and questionnaire were used to know the students’ perception and benefit from online reading activities, especially analytical exposition text. The results of this study indicate that online media supported the students’ movement in reading. In considering the higher percentage at benefit proportion, the writer concluded that reading online helped students easily understand the text. In the overall data, most of the students agreed that the feature in online digital platforms allows them to read. It indicates that online learning gave beneficial support to the students’ reading performance. Also, online knowledge is essential to improve reading skills. The writer suggests to the teacher to improve their motivation in teaching reading analytical exposition text during virtual class with a better strategy or technique to improve students’ comprehension in online reading activities.
