In learning speaking skills, students are required to master several linguistics elements in creating good and polite communication. To achieve this goal, students are asked to have necessary material to be relearned, such as coursebook and students are often asked to demonstrate a role play in speaking practice. However, the main problem is that students do not understand the context and politeness strategies well in the dialogue example in the coursebook. Therefore, introducing the concept of politeness strategies in teaching speaking skills will be very beneficial in helping students to communicate with others both at the school and even outside of school.
This study has three aims. The first aim is to identify the politeness strategies found in the high school English coursebook entitled Bahasa Inggris for Eleventh Graders 2017 Revised Edition. The second aim is to determine the politeness strategy found dominantly. The final aim is to know the implication of politeness strategies found in the high school English coursebook entitled Bahasa Inggris for Eleventh Graders 2017 Revised Edition toward English Language Teaching (ELT), especially in teaching speaking skills. This study uses a qualitative research design to describe and analyze the data appropriately. The data of this study was taken from the dialogue texts found in the high school English coursebook entitled Bahasa Inggris for Eleventh Graders 2017 Revised Edition. Furthermore, the theory about the type of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) was used to analyze the data.
This study shows that the most dominant type of politeness strategy is Bald on Record, with an occurrence percentage of 47%, or equivalent to 57 occurrences, followed by Negative Politeness, which has a 25% occurrence percentage or appears 30 times. The third is Positive Politeness which appears 28 times, or equal to 23%, and the last is the Off-Record Strategy, with a lower percentage of 5%, or the equivalent of 7 occurrences. This study also proves that politeness strategies have a significant role in the dialogue text samples in the English coursebook entitled Bahasa Inggris for Eleventh Graders 2017 Revised Edition, which means that politeness strategies are used to build a polite social interaction. Therefore, teachers must introduce the use of politeness strategies to help students create good and polite social communication both in the school environment and outside the school environment.
