Indonesian Presidential Regulation No. 87 of 2017 explains that Indonesia is a country that upholds moral values, wisdom, and character, so they are called a cultured nation. It will strengthen good character. Based on cultural values for the formation of a nation with character and culture, 18 character values must be applied by teachers in the teaching and learning process. Hence, the writer decided to analyze values in character education provided by the National Education Ministry (Kemendiknas, 2010) in reading texts in the textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” for the eleventh grade 2017 revised edition. The aims of the study are to identify how character values are represented in the text of Bahasa Inggris Textbook, to analyze types of character values that can integrate with the 18 character values provided in the 2013 curriculum, and to know the implication of character values in the textbook in the teaching of reading. In this research, the writer conducted a content analysis. The writer found all 18 character values that are represented explicitly and implicitly by 60 pieces of evidence. The character values mentioned are Religious, Honest, Tolerant, Discipline, Hard Working, Creative, Independent, Democratic, Curious, Nationalistic, Love of the motherland, Appreciative, Communicative, Peace-loving, Reading interest, Environmental awareness, Social care, and Responsible. In addition, the 2013 Curriculum syllabus for class XI mentions the value of character and character education in core competencies I & II as well as the social function of learning materials. Thus, the implication of character values in the teaching of reading is that teachers can develop them in a lesson plan and adapt it to the existing syllabus. Hence, the teacher must be able to find the characters in the textbook, which are represented directly or indirectly in order to convey them to students in the class correctly. Teachers can apply contextual and cooperative learning so that these characters can be optimally integrated.
