Language has an important role not only as a communication tool but also as a means of expressing cultures. Furthermore, the students who are prepared to join the tourism and hospitality industry must have a good understanding and use politeness strategies in their communication. Good communication between the staff and the visitors is the main key to minimizing the possible miscommunication and complaints from hotel visitors. It will be a problem for non-native speakers of English to understand the politeness strategies since it is not their native language. In response to the problems above, this study was intended to investigate the politeness strategies used by the students in their speaking practices to gain two objectives. First, it purposed to know the kinds of politeness strategies the students use in their speaking practices. Secondly, this study also aimed to know the most frequent politeness strategy used by the students in their speaking practices in English for Tourism classrooms. This study used a case study approach with a qualitative descriptive method to gain accurate results. This study was carried out by employing the theory from Brown and Levinson (1987) about the strategies of politeness. They are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategy. The result of this study showed that there are 4 data or 6.5% for bald on record strategy, 28 data or 44.5 % for positive politeness strategy, 24 data or 38% for negative politeness strategy, and 7 data or 11% for off-record strategy. The most frequent politeness strategy used by the students in their speaking practices in English for Tourism classrooms is the positive politeness strategy with 28 data or 44.5%. It is hoped that the students of the English Department have to pay attention to the concept of sociolinguistics, especially regarding politeness. However, on the other hand, the writer hopes that English lecturers can apply politeness as a reference in the teaching-learning activity. Furthermore, this result could be a reference for the other researchers who have the same interest in analyzing the sociolinguistics field, especially in analyzing politeness strategy.
