SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF MENTAL VERBS IN A SHORT STORY “STORIES OF RAINY DAYS VOLUME 2” BY NAELA ALI AND ITS PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATION

English is one of the most important international languages to master or learn. In English learning process, especially reading, almost all students who study reading, especially about vocabulary, have difficulty understanding mental verbs. To understand it requires in-depth research and requires media such as short stories that are interesting and simple but have some mental verbs in the sentence. This is an interesting consideration for writers to be used as research media in researching mental verbs and knowing their pedagogical in reading skills. There are three objectives of this research. First, to know mental verbs found in a short story “Stories for Rainy Days Volume 2” by Naela Ali. Second, to know the dominant type of mental verb found in a short story “Stories for Rainy Days Volume 2” by Naela Ali. Third, to know the pedagogical implication from the research toward English Teaching & Learning (ETL). The writer conducted discourse analysis. The object of this research was Naela Ali’s The Story of Rainy Days. Published on May, 2016. It concerned with language use in social context in written text that occurs naturally without statistical variables and techniques based (Gerot and Wignell, 1994:5) and calculated the percentage. The instrument used to analyse the data was mental verb process theory proposed by Halliday (2004). The results of this research show that there are three main types of mental state processes, namely perception, affection, and cognition. Cognition and Affectiom is the dominant type of mental verb that exists a short story “Stories for Rainy Days Volume 2” by Naela Ali with the result that the percentage of cognition is 35%, the percentage of affection is 35%, the percentage of perception is 30%. Pedagogical Impication Of Mental Verbs In A Short Story “Stories Of Rainy Days Volume 2” By Naela Ali. From the research findings it is associated with the syllabus, and from the syllabus it can be seen that students' knowledge of mental verb can help students master vocabulary and understand their reading as a whole and is useful in learning, especially in narrative text material. The benefits of using short stories in teaching English are also to increase interest in learning English and improve reading skills.
