SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING CONVERSATION HESITATIONS OF NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER IN DIGITAL MEDIA PRACTICES : PSYCHOLINGUISTICS STUDIES ON ELT

English is being taught and learned in Indonesia as a Foreign Language. Nevertheless, the modern world demands communication skills for NNES. Teaching English to NNES is not easy because there are several problems faced, and it is mainly marked with hesitations that related to psycholinguistics studies. Producing too many hesitations will lead to communication breakdowns and even misunderstandings. This study aims to identify the types and functions of conversation hesitations made by NNES that found on YouTube video. The other objectives are to determine the dominant type and function of conversation hesitations used by NNES, and the implication of conversation hesitations in ELT especially in speaking skill. The data were analyzed based on the types of conversation hesitations proposed by (Rose R. L., 2012), and the functions of conversation hesitations proposed by (Caroll, 2007). Qualitative research design is applied in this study since it describes and analyzed the data precisely. The data were analyzed by qualitative content analysis proposed by Mayring (2014). The writer collected the data by documentation from 19 topics of conversation that uttered by Iko Uwais as a Non- Native English Speaker that video found on YouTube entitled “The Art of Actions-Iko Uwais” by Scott Adkins. The total number of conversation hesitations found is 1300 from 19 topics of conversations, which includes (4.53%) of False Start Retraced, (3.69%) False Start Unretraced, (14.38%) Repeats, (1.84%) Restarts, (45.84%) Filled Pauses, (20.92%) Silent Pauses and (8.76%) Word Lengthening. It is clear that Filled Pauses are the most commonly used in the conversation. Furthermore, the speaker still producing too many hesitations in the conversation because the process of being hesitated that not only covers by a single phenomenon but some other phenomena. The study's implication is aimed at Non-Native English Speakers especially students. Minimizing the conversation hesitation used can improve the speaking quality. Students, which also parts of NNES will also put more attention to psycholinguistics studies especially from digital media-based references as in ELT context. As a result, NNES especially students can fine-tune their speaking activities by speaks accurately to deliver the core meaning and achieve effective communication.
