Based on the senior high school curriculum, various kinds of texts are learned by tenth-grade students, and one of them is descriptive text. The students should use various adjectives in descriptive texts to make the text more detailed. Adjectives can be classified into several semantic classes and syntactic functions based on their meaning and roles in phrases or sentences. It is essential to know the semantic classes and syntactic functions of adjectives used by students to reveal how they use adjectives when writing a descriptive text about places. Thus, this study aimed to discover the semantic classes and syntactic functions of adjectives used by tenth-grade students of MAN 1 Magelang in their descriptive text. This study applied qualitative descriptive research to analyze and describe semantic classes and syntactic functions of adjectives in descriptive texts appropriately. The data was collected using documentation, and the documents were descriptive texts written by tenth-grade students of MAN 1 Magelang. The writer analyzed the data by classifying semantic classes and syntactic functions of adjectives according to Downing’s classifications. The results of this study show that for semantic classes of adjectives as descriptors, the most commonly used is the evaluative adjectives which occur 81 times (46.3%). It is followed by adjectives that denote general qualities, which appear 35 times (20.0%), and adjectives that express size, weight, and extent, which occur 20 times (11.4%). Further, adjectives that describe color appear seven times (4.0%), adjectives denoting shape occur four times (2.3%), and adjectives that show meaning related to times occur three times (1.7%). Then, a temporary state adjective appears three times (1.7%), and active or passive process adjectives occur once (0.6%). Besides, for classifier adjectives there are 9 (5.1%) restrictive adjectives found in the texts, eight adjectives (4.6%) that indicate category-specific meaning, and four occurrences (2.3%) of adjectives that relate to groups. On the other hand, for syntactic functions of adjectives, particularly within groups, it is revealed that the most frequently used adjectives function as premodifiers in a nominal group. It occurs 132 times (75.4%). Then, adjective function as post-modifiers in a nominal group only occurs once (0.6%). Furthermore, for adjectives within the clause, it is found that there are 31 occurrences (17.7%) of adjectives function as a subject complement, and 11 adjectives (6.3%) function as an object complement. The results show how tenth-grade students used adjectives in descriptive texts, which has been appropriate but somehow still needs improvement in terms of amount and variation of semantic classes and syntactic functions. Therefore, this study can help students and teachers understand semantic classes and syntactic functions of adjectives used by students in describing places.
