Student teachers who practice teaching in micro teaching class are required to have teaching skills. However, the fact showed that speaking ability still a problem for them in explaining the material. This is indicated by the use of fillers that often appear on the sidelines of the conversation. On the other hand, Duvall at al. (2014) found that excessive use of fillers is certainly an indication of a person's level of speaking fluency that is not well. In the end, it is very influential for student teachers because they are required to convey the material clearly. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the types and functions of fillers used by student teachers when practicing teaching in the micro teaching class. Discourse analysis was used in this study. In addition, the writer also used pragmatic studies in this study. In this study, the writer used theories of Stenström (2014) and Rose (1998) then the theory was also supported by Baalen's (2001). As a result, in this study the writer found three types of fillers, there were silent fillers (SF), unlexical fillers (UF) and lexical fillers (LF). The writer found 437 fillers used by the student teachers when doing teaching practice. The fillers are divided into 45 silent fillers (SF), 208 lexical fillers (LF) and 184 unlexical fillers. Another result showed that the fillers were divided into several functions such as: mark of hesitation (MoH) with a total usage of 281 times or the equivalent of 65%, empathizing (EMP) with a total use of 11% or 47 times, mitigating (MIT) was used as much as 4% or 17 times. In addition, there was the editing of terms (TET) which was used 3% or 13 times and time-creating device (TCD) with 76 times or 18% use. In conclusion, the student teachers should pay more attention to the use of fillers. It was recommended that the student teachers should improve the speaking skills. Because, they are future teachers who will deliver the material in front of their students.
