Speaking is one of the English language skills. It has a high level of difficulty because students have to do in real-time. Speaking skills is how students speak and respond the interlocutor. Therefore, students should master linguistic and non-linguistic of speaking skill. One way to make students master it is the role of the teacher in selecting teaching strategy. To determine it, the teacher should understand what types of teaching strategy and its functions in speaking class. There are two goals of this study. First, to know the types of teaching strategy in speaking class employed by teachers on SMA N 1 Salaman. Second, to know the functions of teaching strategy in speaking class employed by teachers on SMA N 1 Salaman. The writer used Oxford (1990)’s theory to be employed in this study. This study were descriptive and qualitative. The subject of this study is English teachers of SMA N 1 Salaman. The data collection technique was carried out using two research instruments: observation and interview. The data were analyzed by using Creswell (2015)’s theory. The writer employed investigator triangulation to ensure the data trustworthiness. The study showed teachers in SMA N 1 Salaman used four types of teaching strategy in speaking class: cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, and social. The interview showed the functions of each strategy. First, the function of cognitive strategy was to help students understand learning and adding vocabulary through translating words. Then, it would also make the students pronounce the word correctly. Second, the function of the compensation strategy is to assist students in finding out difficult words without switching to the mother tongue. Also, it will make students feel enthusiastic and want to contribute to the speaking class. Third, the function of metacognitive strategy is to make students know their mistakes and can do better in the future. Because they know their mistakes, it hopes they will not do the same things in doing the exam. Last, the function of the social strategy used by teachers in SMA N 1 Salaman is social strategy. This strategy is to make students socialize and know their friends' other points of view to complete the assignments.
