The study is about close reading strategy for students' reading ability related to students' purposes of reading and students' motivation for learning. The use of the reading strategy is to help students improve their analytical skills and critical thinking skills. In addition, the reading strategy helps students get a deeper understanding of what they read. The researcher aims to prove that the close reading technique efficiently teaches reading skills to MAN Kota Magelang eleventh-grade students. The focus of this thesis is to describe the effectiveness of the close reading strategy in teaching reading skills to demonstrate the significant difference behind the application of the close reading strategy. Quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design was used in this research. The subject of this research was two classes of eleventh-grade students at Man Kota Magelang in the school year of 2019/2020, which consisted of 25 students. The writer conducted this research through a pre and post-test. The writer gave a pre-test before implementing the close reading strategy, and then the writer explained the analytical exposition text, which used the close reading strategy. After implementing the close reading strategy, the students were given a post-test. The writer used the same method to control a class with a different strategy: the knowwhat- learn strategy. The writer employed quantitative methods to assess the effectiveness of the close reading strategy when assessing the data. After implementing the close reading strategy, the writer discovered a significant difference in the student's reading skills. It can be seen from t-test = 6.511 > t-table = 2.611, that t-test was higher than t-table. The student's average score in the experimental class in the pretest was 58. After implementing the close reading strategy, the student's average score in the experimental class in the post-test is 74,8. Based on the results above, the writer concluded that the close reading strategy effectively teaches analytical exposition text, especially in reading skills, and increases students' learning interest in analytical exposition text.
